Universal Upgrades begin when "internal technology" can give sentient beings new capabilities they are unlikely to develop naturally. Implants and prostheses are examples of internal technology. This type of technology is not the same as medical internal technology which seeks to restore the natural capabilities. Instead, it is the beginning of an upgrade process that alters civilizations in a fundamental way. The universal upgrade may be an extended and complicated process. The process can be classified into two types one of complete success and the other of partial failure.

Similar to how resort upgrades work at Disney and Universal. In the case of WDW the majority of them occur because of operational issues like room availability or overbooking. In the case of Universal, this could be to move guests from one resort to another one that is open. This is not meant as an insult, but in the current climate it could be difficult to avoid.

Universal upgrades can be utilized on any kind of equipment. They can also be applied to a variety of items at once. This makes them more versatile than other types of upgrades. Jewels

Jewels can be incorporated into armor, weapons or other items. The gems and reagents used to create them give different stat bonuses and secondary effects. They are available in Golden Chests and Rift Incursions. They can be bought from a master craftsman for gold or karma. Jewels can be created using a jewelry table by using five of the same type of reagent and 1 gem to create an item with an upper or lower tier. This process is similar to upgrading a stone at the gemcrafting table.

Jewel tiers are determined by the number of modifiers they have and higher-tier jewels have more modifiers than those of lower tier. The primary effect of a jewel is determined by the tier it's in, and the secondary effect is randomly generated; players can use luck potions to increase the chances of having better secondary effects.

Jewels can be added to items with matching sockets similar to other upgrade components. Weapons are more stringent when opposed to armor.

In addition to the mandatory upgrade components, a lot of upgrade recipes come with an  acceptable materials list. This list contains the other upgrade components that can be used to upgrade an item. It also includes a flag that indicates whether or not the item has an assured boost. It is important to be aware because the value of an upgraded item can vary significantly depending on the 'extras' it comes with, with properly rolled gear being worth a lot more than non-upgraded versions.

For upgrades that require crests and valorstones, they will be listed in a separate listing below the main list. The crests and valorstones needed are determined by the level of the item, with weapon upgrades requiring the most Valorstones.
